with a heavy batter head and o ring, get tuned low enough and have enough beef to sound like a 'real' snare thats just really dry? for rehearsals it would be great If I could fit a snare in my cymbal case

anyone got any soundfiles of picolos working as a main snare?

No need to buy a heavy batter head if you don't already have one, just get an old head and place it upside down on the batter, or cut a 14" disc from a bigger head. BluTack to hold it in place if necessary.

Piccolo snares can sound very fat. I used to have a brass Free Floater piccolo that was really beefy. Shell material makes much more difference with a piccolo. My steel FFS was really dry and crisp, and the birch was all crack.

I used a 13x3 on Friday night and it sounded fatty-fatty-fat-fat. Medium tension batter, with slightly lower-tuned resonant. One patch of MoonGel on the top. Remo Coated Ambassador on the batter and a Hazy something on the bottom.

The ghost notes had a nice low pitch but it still had a nice crack on the rim shots.

(Skip to about 3 mins in)

No doubt stupidly expensive but demonstrates a nice fat sound from a shallow drum.

In 1989 everybody used a piccolo as a main snare and they sounded great!
