Ok, so we have had sky for a year nearly and as a reward for us using their service and such they have decided to put their price up! Although I saw it comming, I still feel the need to change suppliers. The internet speed is rather lame here possibly because we arnt near an exchange etc. the tv is carp. We have the basic.channels and seem to pay a fortune for it, I may aswel get freeview? The.missus loves to .record her soaps though.but basically what do you guys recomend? Not fussed what phone times you get because we use mobiles for calls. So any recomendations?

If you are in a Virgin cabled area, you could get Internet only for around £16-17 a month, a Freeview or Freesat box with a recorder and ditch the landline.
That's what I did. |

We've just ditched virgin at 60 odd quid a month an got talk talk broadband and phone for 21 a month including evening and weekend calls. Got a freeview+ hd recorder box for 140 quid and it's great.
The only thing I loss slightly is the 'catch up' service that virgin had which basically streamed the itv/I player/4od content through the box. I was looking for a freeview box that would do this and couldn't find one. However I think one has now launched just a few weeks later - typical!! I think it's called 'youview' |

| Virgin cable package here. Broadband very fast, tv excellent, V box gives 90 hours of recording, phone OK but lacks a few of the message service facilities of BT. No complaints at all. |

If you have the Sky Dish already then a Freesat Box might be woth considering. I had sky on a 3 month trial and cancelled - with a great deal of difficulty and nastiness from them - and bought the Humax box.
HD channels at no extra cost (I think Freeview do this now) and much better menus etc.
I'm not fussed about Movie or Sport channels. As long as I can get BBC3, BBC4 and the +one stuff I'm happy.
Internet is Virgin through a BT land line.
4 years in and one problem with the Humax box; took ages to switch on- missed a few recordings then completely kaput.
AV Forums say it is a comman fault with a weak capacitor.
Humax said "£60" for a look see as it was out of warranty.
Maplin (80p) capacitor and soldering Iron has fixed it and no more problems for a year now. same thing happened to a mates Humax 2 years in. They overheat if left on all day. |

Whilst the Virgin service is good - be warned they regularly increase prices. It has taken a lot of time calling them to keep the price down.
Just recently, after my original £18 package had reached £28 i cancelled the phone and TV and got down to a 12 month contract for £15 broadband only. My very first bill arrived - £16.99.
When i called to complain they stated (and this is really important) - Your contract is "for the service NOT the prices" so they can pretty much change the prices when they feel like it - and they had done so following me signing up to a contract and them sending me a bill.
Sign up to, say, a £25 package now and i guarantee in 12-18 months it will be significantly higher.
I've never experienced this with any other company - i was with Tesco broadband for years and the price did not change once.

I would have thought illegally spying on the parents of dead children and lying to the police would have kind of tipped you off about the company you are dealing with.
Get rid of sky, get freeview with a box. You can record all your stuff onto the box, it's very easy.

Yes. Beats me why people pay for Sky. Most of the Humax box's have built in recorders now - like the freeview ones. Other brands do make Freesat receivers/box's but Humax seem to be the leader.
I have an ariel on the roof and a dish so also use the TVs' built in FV. - prefer Freesat to FV but now the analogue signal has be turned off - we were one of the last - there is not much between them.
Freesat has a better EPG (and mine has had HD for years where as FV have only recently started including this). Anything is better than funding the Murdoch Empire. |
