Not before time.
What absolutely staggers me - to the point of spluttering my Wednesday Subway all over my screen - is that Radio 1 feel he is too old for their target demographic!
Has any one listened? Puerile, juvenille trash tirades. Lame jokes, lowest common denominator repartee.
Christ surely no one over 16 listens to this?

| I've always liked his shows, they've been a stable part of my routine for the best part of 8 years now, (23yr old by the way), at least he has an opinion unlike most of the other DJ's Radio 1 employ. He'll happily say someones live lounge cover was awful, or that he doesn't like a record rather than proclaim it was 'wicked'. |

Indeed it's been a part of my routine of driving to work for the last 4 years. I like the show, bits of it are childish but I think quite often they're recognising that and playing up to it. As BennyBoy said he isn't afraid to slate something he doesn't like, including to artists faces at times..but generally all done with good humour.
I also think that it becomes a bit how somebody once described Deal Or No Deal to me when I said it's just picking random boxes - the relationships between the people on the show and you and them actually become one of the biggest factors of listening/watching. Having listened every morning for 4 years (just for the one hour I'm driving to work) I know a lot more about the home lives and personal opinions of all on the team that I would with any other radio show, to that point where you feel you actually 'know' the members of the team.
I'd much rather listen to him than to Fearne "I still act like I'm presenting kids TV" Cotton - I can't abide listening to her. And I've just read Nick Grimshaw is to take over - I'll give it a go but generally I can't stand his radio show or when he's presenting on T4. |

Personally I'm gutted to see him go. I know he was a "Marmite" personality, but jeez he had more life in him than the other daytime DJ's (Scott Mills excepted) who, lets face it, are about as interesting as traffic surveys. Opinionated..maybe, Egotistical..maybe, Childish..yes, Tongue firmly planted in cheek - most definitely

I don't mind Chris Moyles as a person, but his radio show does annoy me. Too much talk. He only plays something like 4 or 5 songs an hour. Let's see what Nick Grimshaw has to offer.
I think it's a travesty that Scott Mills got shifted to the 1-4pm slot. He was great to listen to on the way home from work and there were plenty of laugh out loud moments. Greg James just isn't as entertaining. |

Very good point Rocket, the relationships between all the members of the team is one of the reasons why it's been so successful. Chris, Dave, Dom and Aled being the core, then along the way we had Rachel, Carrie and Matt too.
Nick Grimshaw isn't such a bad choice, as I started off disliking him but gradually came to quite enjoy his shows as I drove back from football during the week. |

I'm 35 and always liked Mr Moyles and listened regularly since he started on Radio 1. I see the fact that he doesn't play many records is an advantage, and most of the music of R1 is drivel. I liked his puerile jokes Tried listening to Scott Mills recently and have never heard a worse radio show. Horses for courses I suppose though.
However I have drifted away from Radio 1 in the last 6 months, and now quite enjoy BBC local radio or Radio 4. Showing my age now...?! |

Radio 1 sounds like a hundred ring tones going off on a school bus. It's supremely irritating, the music is ****e, the presenters have no personality or intelligence and the news is laughable (like newsround for 5 year olds).
Do yourselfs a favour and switch to radio 6. Great music presented by normal and interesting people. |

I have meet Chris a few times and I always found him to be a very nice guy and not a bad drummer as well.
I always like his jingles on his show as he uses a lot of my musician pals including "his drummer" (as Chris calls him) Ralph Salmins so anybody who plays the drums, is a nice pleasant guy in person and employs musicians is a good egg in my book

Tried his show once a few years ago, could'nt stand it.
I've got local radio on my alarm to wake me up in the morning, quite enjoy Ken Bruce and Jeremey Vine on Radio 2, and thats it for me apart from Bob Harris on the way back from gigs. Cant stand DJ's when they do too much talking about themselves and I hate listening to the same tunes OVER and OVER again. |

Since Mark+Lard moved on, the only stations I listen to are Planet Rock, Talksport or Radio 4 extra. In fact I don't much listen to the wireless. Prefer me CD's. I never got on with Chris Moyles....possibly I'm too old and grumpy for that kind of humour in the mornings. |

| Really like his show and gutted to see him go. As his always says himself, if you just don't "get it (the show) then you don't get it". Some people love it, others hate it. What I dislike the most though is that he seemed to be the last presenter who suited someone of my age (29). Now the station seems to be run for kids, by kids. |

Moyles was brought in to destroy Radio 1, which he has succeeded in doing, anyone that likes him has to be brain dead!
Radio 2 has long surpassed this drivel in audience figure by tenfold!
If he committed suicide tonight, 99.999999999999999% of the country would say it's not a moment too soon and celebrate.
Let us please get back to decent broadcasting. |

Jeez OA, I couldn't disagree more with this. Moyles certainly wasn't brought in to destroy Radio1, he's done very well for them, the fact that he's the longest running Breakfast Show presenter is testament to that.
Radio2 do have a larger audience at the moment I believe, but it hasn't always been like that, and there's maybe 2million in it, hardly 'tenfold' is it?
Regarding your crass suicide comment, come on, he divides opinion but he's no paedophile, murderer, politician or banker!!
As for 'getting back to decent broadcasting'... there's plenty of decent broadcasting OA, do you need someone to show you how to work the dial to get another station?
Personally, I used to dislike him, I thought he was rude and oafish, but I think he's mellowed a bit over the years. I now actually find the banter between him and the team quite entertaining (although when they play any records I switch to Radio4!). I like when they have guests on it seems like a real conversation and a bit of craic rather than a normal boring interview. I like when they link up with Jake Humphrey for the F1, or Dave or Aled outside the studio. And I like the fact that he's quite blunt, not as rude as he used to be, but he pretty much says what he thinks, which is a rare quality these days. And he's done a hell of a lot for charideeee
So yeah, I quite liked him, but probably only Radio4 in the mornings now, can't see myself tuning in for Grimshaw, especially when Radio1 have stated they're specifically trying to target an even younger demographic.

Please offer an example of this decent broadcasting, if you have time while condescending from your ivory tower. Is it "Friday Night is music night"?

Psychophantic? I don't know what it means but I like the word.
For those that don't appear to know - and a few admit to it on here - Good Broadcasters include: John Peel (RIP), Paul Jones, Eddie Maer, Mark Radcliffe, Stuart Maconie, James Naughtie, Terry Wogan, Johnnie Walker, Alan Brazil and a guitar by Fender/Drum Kit by Gretsch.
Bad broadcasters include; John Humphreys, Chris Evans, Jonathon Ross Fearne Cotton, and Chris Moyles.
I never buy the listening figures argument either - It's not like they start with no listeners is it? Who wants the equivalent of ITV on the wireless?

I'd have thought that listeners tune in for the music played and not the presenter?
John Peel was unique in bringing new music to the masses.
I've done quite a few shows with Chris Evans over the years with different bands and he's always been fine. He's great when dealing with kids.
I am sure that someone in TV once told me that viewing figures were made up nonsense??? |

The above is, of course, all in your personal opinion.
I agree about Radcliffe and Maconie. But I think Wogan is beyond past-it, however I do like Chris Evans. It appears taste in Radio DJ's is just as subjective as taste in music, or TV programmes. There's no definitive good or bad, which is why I find some of the comments in this thread baffling. |

There's nothing baffling about any of the comments, they are peoples opinions. The thing to remember is that Radio 1 is aimed at teenagers and I'm guessing that many who have made negative comments, myself included are outwith the target demograph. We're too old and grumpy for Chris Moyles. We've turned into our Dads. We dont get involved when a kids TV show is pulled, so we shouldn't really get involved when it happens with a radio show aimed at younger people and I therefore retract all my comments. There's so much choice with radio these days that avoiding Chris Moyles is easy. Tune into something else. |

Opinions? Well it's a forum so yes. 'Kids Radio Show'? well it's not advertised as such is it?
"tune into something else" I do. But I'm a licence payer and the BBC is our state broadcasting supplier. If he was on commercial radio I wouldn't give a toss. I've detested daytime radio one for decades - since I was a kid in what would now be the Moyles demographic. The playlist mentality, record pluggers, DJ's who used it as a stepping stone to becoming 'Presenters'. It was always notionaly accepted as the National Pop Music station. I can remember Mike Read refusing to play Frankie, I can remember Tony blackburns tirade against the Jam and refusing to play their records. I don't want the old Fab FM back - jeez, who would subject anyone with an ounce of sanity these days to 'Our Tune'?
Most of the people in my faves list are Music people - they record sessions, write books about music, play in bands, want to share their passion.
wogan is old sure but he knows about connecting with listeners - much more than viewers.
Oh and I forgot to mention Brian Matthew from R2 - ledgend. |

I hated Wogan. There, I've said it. I'm sure he's a lovely man, but I couldn't stand him for more than about five seconds on radio. I didn't mind Chris Moyles at all, but the only time I ever listen to R1 breakfast show is if I'm driving somewhere of a morn. Who listens to Radio 1 for good music anyway?
