Well, I don't post on here much, but lurking here always provides invaluable info! I'm working on my first restoration at present, an Elite from 1978-ish. A bit of a mug's game really, in that I bought the shells from a chap who'd clearly stripped a knackered set down for spares, then I bought a load of said spares off him! Still, you can't blame a guy for trying to make a buck. The list-making, price comparing and planning appeals to my geeky side, so I'm enjoying myself. I should be finishing the kit in one of the new Highwood wraps. All in all I reckon I'll spend over £500 on a kit worth £400 on a good day, but I plan on keeping it and using it as my main kit. I'm just chuffed to have a little project on the go and to learn a little more every day.

Occasionally piping up with stupid questions and irrelevant information on the MD forum since 2003.

Unusually busy with work for this time of the year.

Drumwise I'm restoring a (no-name) vintage piccolo for a friend of my old man. Re-wrapped and put together, fiddling about with head selection as it's slightly out of round.
Pain in the harse.

And that's before I find tension rods to fit.

Don't start me off......

I just stripped down a battered Squier Strat in aged white. Replacing the white scratchplate with a nice tortoiseshell one and making a few other minor mods and repairs along the way.

Oops. Wrong forum.

OK. Drum-wise, only small stuff at the mo - upgrading the strainer on my Bev 21 and re-fitting a cymbal arm to my Hayman bass drum.

Have just finished, after 4 weeks work on and off a nesting Bop-kit - and sold it in one day. At the sametime feeding sheets of wood into my former, making snares.

The next one is just out, one layer of 3-ply 2 mm birch and 2 layers of 3 mm poplar inside. Will be veneered with 0.6 mm african mahogany inside and outside. @ 4"x14".

Oh - and this, bought very cheaply:

http://www.gratisimage.dk/image-7760_4FFEB3D0.jpg

Half the "Gripper"-lugs were broken, but the remaining 10 soon found new owners in Norway - and 2 went on to Australia....

That paid for the 20 Pearl lugs now on it - not Taiwonese breakable copies. They were just too long, so I had to grind 1 mm off each - and 5 of the 20 were a little different, being 2 mm. too long.....

http://www.gratisimage.dk/image-C2F2_4FFEB3D0.jpg

The adjustable rollers at each end of the wires were missing, delivered for free from friends at the Danish site, Trommeslageren.dk.

They are necessary, as the shell is without a snarebed, and allow the snares to be easily placed exactly where you want it in relation to the head.

http://www.gratisimage.dk/image-9E00_4FFEB3D0.jpg

A very nice drum - and only the second Brass snare NOT to give me a headache after 5 minutes!

Looks OK, and works a treat!

Otherwise, the band is off in 4 directions on holidays, so NO gigs this summer....

Jon

I TRY to tell myself I already have what I want.....

Right, wellI'm out in w/shop putting final touches to a "PowerBeat" snare drum 14x6.5" 10xlugger. It had been let go so I've stripped, cleaned, fitted new strainer, new Remos, new tension rods (and of course I'm 1 x short!!)mmmmgrrrr!!
I have several items of drummy advertised so I'll add this drum to the "Show Room"
Also still in middle of recovering BOP kit with BD half done but now that the 2 x BD lug casings have arrived from Andy Bronson, I can finish the kit. "Gold" sparkle wrap it is.

Oh our footy is on soon so back into studio and flick Tele on.

Interesting to see the rollers on that Pearl snare Jon. I found that on my Spacer snares the snare strainers were a a few mm further out than on many other snare drums, so the snare cords or straps were set too diagonally. This reduced effective vertical drop when they were thrown off, so they would sometimes rattle against the bottom head when the drum was played hard. I came up with a round bar welded to the plate which holds the strainer. The cords or straps now drop vertically to the round bar and go nearly 90º around it then down at at very shallow angle to the snare beds. This gives more vertical drop and solves the problem.

I have found some smaller normal snare drums (eg 10") do also have a problem of "snare OFF" rattle, and a bar set away from the shell cures this nicely, or a block glued and/or screwed to the horizontal flange of the bottom hoop.

I am about to be given a Bell set that was on its way to the tip - no idea what it may look like but it is apparently red. I suspect it is something like a Gigster with flat hoops and clips. May be useful for parts or may make an interesting project. Bell Music used to be in Surbiton and did mail order stuff I think.

I've just finished this early 70s Yamaha kit. It's a YD-205 in Black willow. A previous owner had painted most of the chrome (including the entire snare) with silver spray paint, but it was basically very sound. I replaced the BD hoops as the original chrome ones were missing the inlays and the spray paint was covering up the usual rust that these hoops suffer. It's 20/12/12/16/14sn. Great sounding kit and the steel snare sounds great. Kit cost the equivilent of about 60 quid but as usual a fair bit was spent on the restore.

Replacing the arc spurs on my vintage Ludwig Champagne sparkle bass drum. Being just 20" the arc spurs don't pull out enough to keep the drum stable once the rack tom is mounted. Got correct ones now - fold away type from Ludwig Len. Just gotta patch up the holes that will be left. Any pointers on how I fill the gaps in the wrap? I have offcuts left.

Ludwig vintage Vistalite (Tequila Sunrise), Super Classic (Champagne sparkle), Speed King/Hercules, vintage Avedis Zildjian. Snares: Vistalite & Acrolite.

Thanks Mcmaul. It really is a very nice kit and well worth the effort. Heck, any old yammy is worth the effort in my book.

Well funny enough I was given an old Ludwig Kit last week, bloke in our Village had it for many years, result ! Anyway the finish was gross - like something from a 30's Fred & Ginger film, sticks and top hats all over it, luckily this wrap came off with out too much effort, 26" 13" 14" and 18" in 45 minutes, good eh ? However the matching Snare seemed to de-laminate a little when I used too much heat gun on the shell to get the glue softened. I have now begun the sawing ! I fancy short stack toms, and I am pretty sure the thin shells should be fine without the reinforcement ring things, my Pearl Exports did not need them etc, but they do now seem a little floppy. No matter, it is only an old kit for the practice room, talking of which, I think the matt black emulsion looks great on the bass drum and toms, certainly the dodgy old snare mechanism looks 'halfords fresh' now it has a thick coat of enamel, I have also had to 'Dremel' the shell of the other snare he gave me, ( took a while ) to lose the engraving ( swirly patterns all over like flowers or flames with 'Ludwig' in the middle ) now smooth and black enamel painted - looks great.

Some git had written all over the inner bell of the cymbals with felt tip I think, looks like he wanted to write A or M Zildddian or something, but I have not fallen for that nonsense, all now brasso'd off and looking like chrome plate ! The sound from the 20" ride was sooo trashy I decided to invert it with a bit of pressure from my sze 9's - easy, and I can live with the cracks that seemed to appear, makes a really interesting boing, boing sound now, result !

Apart from that, no old drum stuff happening here. xx
