I have been thinking Alot about if I should put myself through it again and join a band, maybe a band with a little less conquest for world domination
My instructor seems to think I could be ready, actually he said I was band ready and not to put my playing down
Maybe start my own rather than trying to fit my skills around a band maybe get them to fit around me
What would you do? |

There's no such thing as band-ready?
I say go for it.
If you want to start your own band that's cool but there's far more responsibility than playing in "somebody else's".

You're band-ready when you can hold a 4/4 beat..... look at AC/DC.......
If you want to do it, do it no matter what your instructor says. If you can find a bass player you get on with, you're 80% there. |

Maybe look around for someone to jam with, if you fancy gigging look for an audition, they can only say no can't they. I'm cr@p but by listening to the bass player and trying to fit into the music I've not failed at an audition yet...somehow You don't need massive chops to gig in pubs mate, just a solid groove and good time keeping. |

I joined my first band at the age of about 15 and we all learned together to play. I learned the drums "on the job" so to speak. I know you had a bad experience before but being in a band honestly doesn't need to be a big deal, just get stuck in. I agree with Drongo too, forming a band is as easy as pie when your a teenager steeped in "the scene", however once your past that age joining a band is far easier than forming one.

I guess I have nothing to lose really.
One guy asked if I could play Iron Maiden - The Trooper, I can't play the chops or the bass as it seems really quick but it seems to be mostly on the ride

| The thing with Maiden is, it sounds really scary to play but it's easily simplified. I played Wasted Years with my covers band not long after I'd started drumming, it wasn't actually anywhere near as hard as it sounds. I just had a listen to the trooper, you could easy get away with losing some of the quicker fills and just putting a solid beat behind it. |

| Under normal circumstances I'd agree with you Shark, but unfortunately there's at least 2 really good Maiden tributes in the North East and a load of hateful spiteful would be musos who are quick to put people down if they can't play like the CD :-( |

It's mainly the fills I was worried about. The bass can be simplified into a double but those fills lol my knee jerke reaction was he'll no but I just downloaded the track and I plan to get to the workshop tomorrow and try it
The band I have been speaking to only do the pub and club scene and are a cover not a tribute |

Can the rest of the guys play it? Don't write yourself off before you hear the rest of them play. You'd be amazed at how many guys claim to be able to play stuff but can't actually get near it in real life.
I played my first paying gig two weeks after I lifted a pair of sticks for the very first time. Go for it.

| Go to auditions and jam nights and get some songs under your belt, having to learn them for auditions, before you decide whether to join a ready-made band or form your own. Experience playing with other people, regardless of their standard, is valuable and even songs you don't think you will like can turn out to be challenging and fun to play. |

There's one near me in Gateshead I do believe, it's on a Monday night at The Fox near Felling Metro. I went a few years ago, it was a good night, my mate who plays bass got up and played drums heh heh. |

Ok now im officially cacking it
Just had the band send me a message and we are meeting up this sunday from 1 - 3 and they have sent a list of songs they would like me to take a look at and also asked me what songs i play as they would also like to learn them which is nice really
Anyways has anyone done these and any advice to simplify them for a useless git lol

these are good sites for drum scores
http://thedrumninja.com/drum-transcriptions/ http://www.drumscore.com/transcriptions.html http://www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/ac-dc-highway-to-hell-guitar-tab-s289t0
songsterr is usefull cos you can select guitar as an instrument and play along to that. I bought the app and listen to it whilst playing along. I seem to have got the upgrade free, and with that you can cut the song to half speed to play along, and you can loop certain sections. Like all user driven sites though the score can be a bit suspect at times.
I would pick three of the songs and concentrate on them, just look at the others and have an idea whats going on and when you turn up say thats what you have done. don't be afraid of having some score or cheat sheets on sunday.
Don't think of it as an audition, more of a fun jam. I always used to ring the studio and see if the room was free for an hour before i met up with a new band, gave me an hour to warm up and calm down, but thats not always possible.
and if this sunday comes to nothing look on it as a dress rehearsal for the next one.
I would put an ad in gumtree saying exactly what level you are at and ask for other to meet you and have fun learning with you. And be firm about filtering out the wannabe's and the time wasters.

| Wish I'd seen this thread before - I've got transcriptions for all 6 songs. Sorry it's too late now to do anything other than wish you the best of luck. Just concentrate on your groove and timekeeping above anything else and relax and enjoy it. Regardless of the outcome it's another learning experience that will only benefit you so don't try to second guess yourself and just play what feels comfortable and natural at any given moment. |

I think it's also a sign that they're nowhere near as experienced as you think, mate. So relax. No experienced band will ask you what songs you play. They'll just want you to get on with it. They're noobs too, I reckon. Go, play, have fun.

Yup, a bunch of lads wanting to start a band by the sounds of it otherwise they would have a set list locked down already. May be wrong of course though |

Gold star to beezerk and mully,
They were fairly fresh, most of the band had 2 years experience apart from me who has 1 year and we all met for the first time today so i was alot more relaxed once i knew that. I had a good time though and im sure they will be in touch either way but so far it looks good.
