I want to build and manage my own website. Nowt fancy, just pics and video, links and them widgets to FB/Twitter/youboob etc etc... and contact me section.

I know I will have to pay for the hosting of the name.... but are there any free website building programs or apps or summit like that that are simple to use?

is a wordpress blog sorta thing acceptable?

Wordpress is fine. I've always tended to handcode but recently built a site with WP for the first time. Seems ok and the person I was making it for has found it fairly easy to update it.

The only thing is finding a decent (free) template and editing it, but I guess it depends how good you want the site to look!

Wordpress is, to all intents and purposes, the business. I use it ALOT for client sites as it works out of the box and you can customise it into the ground; you can make it effectively invisible.
