There was a thread on the forum a while back about subkick microphones and doing a DIY version (or a thread got hijacked onto subkicks), but I can't find it now. Anyway, for anyone who is wondering if they're worth the hassle or what they're all about, I found this interesting review of two commercial subkicks and a DIY version.

You might find it interesting. Seems like a subkick alone is pretty rubbish but useful when mixed in with something more conventional. |

| Interesting, cheers. The idea that you need a normal mic too (which sounds sensible to me) reminds me of when Oscar Peterson had his TV series on BBC he once talked about the extra bass notes on his piano, usually covered with a flap so as not to dis-orientate you. He played just the bass strings and, as he said, they really made a very unsatisfactory and vague tone, then he played notes an octave up, then he demonstrated doubled-up octaves based on the extra deep strings and the octave above each, and the sound was really impressive. |

| 2 or 3 great series, I think 2 with Louie Bellson and one or two with Martin Drew. No doubt at all in my mind that if Martin Drew had been American he would have been classed as one of the all time great jazzers. |

| Absolutely right. Subkick is just for the really low stuff which is ill-defined. What you might pair it with then depends on the sound you are going for. |
