Who made you take up the drums?
As a lad it was Stewart Copeland for me and the traditional grip has been with me ever since. |

Matt Sorum's solo in GN'R's live at Tokyo DVD made me want to start playing when I first saw it as a boy...
It took me about 15 years to get my backside in gear and finally start playing. |

My milkman. I saw him play with his covers band and thought "I want to do that". He encouraged me in every way possible - letting me play on his beloved Ludwig Super Classic at his farm whenever I wanted and even taking me to buy my first kit when he spotted a bargain in the local classifieds (this was 20 years ago). It's local heroes who keep me playing. He died on Boxing Day of a brain tumour in his 50's. He was an absolute gem of a man.
I've never been in awe of, or aspired to the standard or style of any "name" drummers. |

| No one really. Struggled so much to find a band to play bass in and got so disheartened by the lack of creativity found during my search and the crazy questions such as 'whats your image?', 'how loud do you play?' etc that I just gave up. Whilst getting bored with life without a band, I bought a 2nd hand kit and that was it. I'm still crap at drums but have found that it is a great instrument to just get on and have fun. More so that a stringed instrument. You don't have to play chords or play in tune just in time. Love it! Still miss the bands though :( |

| Wasn't any particular drummer or band for me, was more the desire to make music, and after an abortive effort at playing the bass, decided to have a go at the drums - and never looked back (although did have another abortive go at the bass, and have since learned enough guitar to strum along during drunken sing-songs!). |

I know this sounds a bit convenient, but the first drummer who inspired me was Matt Chamberlain. I was MASSIVELY into Pearl Jam when I was younger and the first time I heard a track that I really admired the drumming on was the officially-released live version of 'Alive', which Matt happens to have played on whilst he was filling in for them. What's weird is that, now I've moved away from band drummers and more onto session-type players and drummers' drummers, his playing is even MORE relevant now than it was then because he's become a session virtuoso.

He doesn't get much of a mention, but Tico Torres of Bon Jovi was a bit influence to me as a kid, followed by Steven Adler and Matt Sorum from GnR.
It was only when i went to university in 1997 that my eyes were opened to the great 60s and 70s drummers, who have been a bigger influence since then. |

| The seed had been sown by seeing caberet bands when on holiday as a child but the drummer who kicked me over the line was Queens Roger Taylor. Im glad he is now getting recognition he deserves, there was a time in the 1980s where a number of people seemed to be on his case, not that probably had any effect on such a successful drummer. |

My cousin, who had a kit and was playing for my brother's fledgeling band (I was about 14, he was 15). And two guys I was at school with and with whom remain great friends with to this day, we all started playing at around the same time, and we're all still playing, 40 years on.

The resident drummer at the local working men's club. When I was about 14 (back in the early 70's) I was booked to play my clarinet and sax one Saturday night. The piano/drums duo that backed me was amazing. I remember playing the theme from Aquarius and the sound of the drummer playing behind me and laying down a really solid beat - I knew then I really wanted to play the drums. His name was Charlie Taylor and in later years I ended up drumming for his brother Bob who was a really swinging organist/piano player - whatever happened to organ/drums duos? In the working men's club Charlie played a lovely little red silk pearl Beverley kit and when he played with a local big band he had a fabulous Ludwig Super Classic in Champagne Sparkle. |

Sitting side stage in Tilbury working mens club in the late sixties, aged about 8 or 9 , absolutely mesmerised by the band and more particularly the drummer.
Later it was Roger Taylor and the Sheer heart attack album that really got me interested. And my dad who bought me an old kit from a mate at work. And his mate who resprayed it bright red for me. What could be better than being 14 with a drum kit ?

| Hearing the samba drumming at Carnival time in Montevideo at 3 years old got my pulse beating. I suppose the 60s Beat boom meant I saw drum kits on TV and liked what I saw but knew nothing about them. Then my older brother got an Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation record...what a player, what a sound! Then he got a Cream record with Ginger Baker opening my eyes and getting me into Rock, then Ginger's mate and former teacher Phil Seaman did a trio gig at my school 3 weeks before he died, and I got a taste for jazz too. My Dad traveled a lot and always bought local music recordings as well as lots of classical and I suppose that got me listening to a wide range of different styles. The first times I heard Bill Bruford and Billy Cobham also had a major influence on me. |

We had a tw@t of a lighting tech that put a Par 64 3" away from his bass, a really nice vintage Luddy and the wrap ignited
Liam was so laid back, he said he wouldn't get it repaired as it added history to the drum!! |

| The possibly somewhat atrocious Tom fills on the Sex Pistols version of Johnny Be Good were the perfect coat hanger air drum bedroom experience for a young teenager whose parents would not buy a drum kit. It took nearly 25 years to get that first kit, and funnily enough I have never even tried to play along to that song now that I own 2 kits! |

When I was starting drums seriously they were relatively FAR more expensive and less readily available than nowadays, and information about playing drums was also much scarcer, for a start there were no drum magazines. The one regular source of information which informed and influenced me was Talking Drums, compiled and edited by Roger Horrobin at Premier. Yes of course it was partly there to promote Premier products, but through it I read of many great players in all styles of music to listen out for, it gave information about drums, percussion, hardware etc., and it was always a great read.
I reckon this probably fueled my enthusiasm as much as any individual drummer, so thanks Roger and Premier! |
