I would much rather be revered on Arsenal wages than universally detested on Cheating Scumbag wages.

Why, RVP, why?

I hate United as much as anyone else that doesn't support them but RVP is way too good for Arsenal.

But I don't see why a) he would go to Utd, knowing that everyone hates them - why not go abroad where he can be loved for his awesomeness?; and b) why would Arsenal sell such an awesome player to a Prem cometitor, when they could easily have got as much money for him from abroad?

Honestly have no idea.
Does seem odd unless they just had no realistic offers from abroad and knowing he only have 1 year left before he was free scared them.Don't know.

1. 'everyone hates them'/'universally detested'
Well, no, they're the most popular club in the world. He will potentially be 'revered' there more than he could be anywhere else.

2. 'why not go abroad?'/'why would Arsenal sell to a Prem competitor?'
Presumably he wanted to stay in the Premiership.

Greed = greed = greed

Michael Gray was on BBC tv this morning, he was asked about the general feeling of the public that footballers have been shown to look like gits due to the Olympics.
In typical tv coached footballer fashion he said there was nothing wrong with the game or players

I find it hard to hate a football team - any team. I don't get that emotionally involved with'em. There's some tossers in my own side though.

Whilst they might have more fans in the world than any other team, I would stake my house (if I owned one) on the fact that if you asked every football fan in the country who their least favourite team was, Man Utd would come out worse than anyone else. Possibly closely followed by Liverplol.

Everyone boos a player that's defected to Man Utd. If a good, popular player goes anywhere else (that's not a local rival of their original team) they can be forgiven and still respected, possibly even receiving a warm welcome back when they return for matches. I suspect this won't happen with RVP now. It's a stigma that's attached to Utd that all players must be aware of, he must know he'll be booed on a regular basis now by everyone that's not a utd fan.

I'm sure (a) more money, and (b) winning stuff (hopefully) will be compensation enough.

Is there a stigma attached to united or just jealousy due to their success?

Kev's got the key word here: 'Agents'.

I feel they are responsible for the way game is/is heading. The player is happy as long as he's getting paid as much as possible for doing what he loves and is good at.
As for Footballer's behaviour and the general public opinion of them, it's a minority that give footballers a bad name. It's the nice guys out there that papers dont seem to want to tell everyone about!

Agreed that it is the agents/personal managers that keep the little darlings wrapped in cotton wool, and dictate which club they play for, as happens in the music industry also, isolate your commodity from the real world and have total control of their money!

Fair point. There are a few honest ones though... Scott Parker is a good ol' boy. Possibly Timmy Crouch? He falls over himself a lot but I don't recall any dives. Michael Dawson.

Yeah I'm pretty much out. Just been through the entire list of players on the Fantasy League site in search of defence for my argument, but there just aren't any stand-out honest players.

I concede.

Still hate Man U though.

I've been reading a lot of people complain about RVP's move. I particularly like Piers Morgans comment on how he's just another mercenary. Never mind he spent NINE YEARS at the club, and then decided to move on. Nine years is a long time, and he's been a very good servant to Arsenal. Still is, as he got top dollar from United, whos financial woes are well documented. Nine years is much longer than Morgan ever spent in a job, so who is he to call anyone else a mercenary?

Arsenal are in a transition at the moment. Seems to me that Wenger's made some good business this year. Football is the only 'industry' where a large number of people have so many unrealistic expectations of the main people involved. Most of them have no involvement in 'their' team other than buying a T-shirt a year and watching the telly, yet they think they have some sort of right to deliver all kinds of bullying, racist, mysoginistic abuse towards those involved. They appear to justify themselves by pointing to the huge wages a small percentage of the footballists who are lucky enough to be paid large sums of money.
