So I'm a sound engineer. A lot of the work I tend to get is recording drums. So when I came back to the country I decided to try and build a reputation as the go to place in the UK to record drums. My idea involved building a studio from the ground up with a simple design brief: I wanted the best sounding room in the country for drums. Well I'm 18 months into the project at this point. My main live room is about 29 feet by 20.5 feet with 18 foot ceilings. I'm already getting a steady stream of great work. But the story hasn't finished yet. I am about to start building a stone room, 2 more neutral rooms and a new control room. Anyone interested in seeing a photo blog?

Oh yes! Sorry, I did not phrase that quite emphatically enough...

...OH YES!

My studio is also my workshop and office, with furniture, machinery, materials and (ahem) a few musical instruments. It has to be theoretically about the worst place in the world to record, but with a bit of imagination I am able to get fairly good results despite the regular noise of planes, sirens, angle grinders, cars and motorcycles, chain saws, stone carvers and wood carvers I share a yard with!

Sounds great. I'd love to be able to get wide open drum sounds. Using my bedroom kinda prevents that at the moment, but, I'd be interested to see what you're doing.

Here goes then!

Here's a rough sketch of the original layout (note I'm crap with sketchup):

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/Circlebefore.jpg

As you'll see, the above will get completely ripped out. As an aside, a long the way we manage to get our hands on the building next door so the studio ultimately doubles in size. Here's the original basic plan we started working to:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/circlestudiov2.jpg

EDIT: hmm... any idea why the photos arent showing up?

The pictures won't show up because this forum doesn't support pictures. Links to photobucket etc are ok though.

Doh. Makes for a dull photoblog I think if you have to copy and paste every link to your browser to see the pics. Hmm. Anyone still interested?

Yeah go for it. I often prefer just cmd clicking and opening al the pics in new tabs. Can switch between pics quick that would usually be separated by loads of other pics!

Let's give it a go then and see how much interest it gets. So first thing we had to do was tear the old studio down. Here's a pic from the control room just after we started:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/PA250040.jpg

and here's one from the loading bay at opposite end of the building (you can just see my assistant through the window in the control room:

Will do!

Finally the ripping out process ends:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/IMG_2183.jpg

the formwork goes in:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/IMG_2188.jpg

we then put in regufoam floats (so that the concrete floor will be fully isolated from the shell of the building), a DPC (so that water from the concrete doesn't pour down onto the floating structure) and metalwork to strengthen the whole structure:

Sooooo... next step along the way was when the concrete arrived. Here's how it went:

1. We hoped the mixer would be abe to back all the way in (it just made it) but with a chute just short of 3 metres that would be a lot of work to shift 14 cubic metres of concrete so a chute of about another 2.5 metres was devised so we would at least get it dumped in the middle of the room:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/IMG_2211.jpg

2. From there on in it went pretty smoothly:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/IMG_2213.jpg

3. But sh*t there was a lot of it:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/IMG_2216.jpg

[this was the point I went to lunch and left the builders to it]

4. And this was how it looked when I got back...nice finish though:

Good question. The designer I had on board at that point felt it was more important to utilise the maximum ceiling height than have the desk face toward the main live room. To be frank, that was a poor design plan. I took a second (and third) opinion on it as I too was concerned. Best advice was that a room like this would have major acoustic problems. As a result, I switched to a different designer for the control room.

On the bright side, the original designer did a fantastic job of the live room. His design brief was that I wanted the best drum room in the country. I've had great feedback on the room from some major producer/engineers since I opened including, last summer, Michael Wagener (Ozzy Osbourne: No More Tears/Ozzmosis/Live n Loud, Metallica: Master of Puppets, Alice Cooper, Queen, Motley Crue, The Rasmus, Kings X, Skid Row, Randy Rhoades, WASP etc etc etc! ). More recently I had the very awesome session drummer, Simon Edgoose (who I understand is a mod on this very site), working here. His view was that we nailed it. All in all, I'm pretty happy with it ;-)

Heheh. Here's the story. To save money I got my teenage son to strip out the old place ready for the refurb. The extinguisher was on the upper floor at the time. He left it there because he "thought it would look funny". He was right, it does look funny.... but we now have to wait til the walls get high enough to take it down.

Today you can see that walls are starting to appear. It doesn't look like it but here's a 30 ft run:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/IMG_2241.jpg

If you look really closely you'll see that the concrete blocks are not only two deep but they are staggered so that there are the fewest points that mortar meets mortar.

I just heard that the contractor who built the live room for me, Trevor Prust, passed away tonight after a relatively short battle with motor neurone disease. Mine was the last contract he ever completed. I'm both shocked and saddened to hear the news. He was a lovely bloke who took a real pride in his work. May he rest in peace.

That's sad news, he did a great job for you and looked as dedicated to the project as you did. I followed the build very closely indeed on the other forum and between you both have built a great room - well some people go through life and leave nothing behind - that can't be said for him.

Sorry to hear that latest news. Some sort of tribute would indeed be very fitting.

Sounds like the project is not located a million miles from me, so I be sure to follow this thread through to the conclusion.

so, anyoneinterested in seeing the kind of airgap you need to prevent sound transmission (even where you have 8" concrete walls)/.

In essence the idea is that there will be a soundproof room built within the structure of the building. That room will then not touch anything in the building so that low frequency sound cannot transfer through the fabric of the building. You can see here the airgap in question. It's a minimum of 200mm at its narrowest point. That way no low frequency sound can 'jump' the gap which not only will mean the neighbours wont even know when motorhead are playing inside but, more importantly, the low frequency rumble from, say an HGV parked outside, wont get onto any of the recordings.

Here's the view down the airgap when you walk into the main room from the kitchen and look right:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/IMG_2242.jpg

Here's one from the aircon chimney:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/IMG_2243.jpg

And here's one from where the storeroom off the control room:

you can get some idea how the room sounds if you take a listen on www.circlestudios.co.uk (new website is in process of being built so it's currently pointing to myspace). If you scroll down you'll find some unprocessed drums.

The walls at their highest point are up to a little over 12 feet now. We'll shortly start to see what the roof will look like.

Here's another shot from the new control room position:

Here's today's instalment then...

From the Control Room position:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/07032009354.jpg

From the upstairs loft/lounge:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/07032009351.jpg

And from the entrance door (kitchen side):

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/07032009360.jpg

You can see how the walls are angled to minimise parallel surfaces (and reduce modal ringing).

So... here's today's update Scaffolding is up, lounge wall is all the way up to full height and live room walls are up to about 15 feet in places.

Here's the view from the mix position:

Here's one from the aircon chimney:

And one looking diagonally to the booth position:

My camera must be pretty crappy because it makes the space look completely tiny. It's actually over 8 feet from the ground to the bottom of the scaffolding platform but looks nothing like it on these pics!

Here's one which should give you more of an idea of the internal height. Bear in mind this is one of the lowest points of the room.

If you look closely here you can see some of the sparky's handywork:

And a close up:

Here's a question for you then. If you need 8 inch thick concrete walls to stop any sound getting out or going into the room, what do you do for the roof?
