What makes a great drummer?

In my opinion it’s a drummer that has the ability to make the musicians around him or her feel good, can play a simple groove in the pocket and make you want to dance.

One of the highlights for me at the Namm show in LA this year was seeing Steve Jordan play at the Yamaha groove night. I have been a fan of Steve since I first heard him playing on the early Steve Khan albums. For those that don’t know much about Steve Jordan he burst into the limelight when he was the drummer on the David Letterman show ‘ Saturday night live’ at the tender age of 18 years old he has since gone onto working with a host of great acts including Neil Young, Chaka Kahn, The blues brothers, Donald Fagan, James Brown and The Rolling Stones to name a few. He has received two Grammy awards has played on many film scores including Shaft and Babyboy. He is not only one of the great drummers but he is proficient on the bass and guitar, and is a respected songwriter and producer.

For many musicians out there this video will be greatly received me being one of them.

This is not a high budget video or a beginners guide to playing groove, but this is where you watch the master at work. You can see how he ticks, how he works on playing with such good time and feel. Steve plays and explains how he came up with some of the patterns he has played on hit records.

He is joined by the legendary Danny ‘Kootch’ Kortchmar (Funkadalic) and bass player Bob Cranshaw where he plays in various musical styles ( look out for the great swing example.)
