Eric Delaney – A Forgotten Drummer?
ERIC DELANEY – “Who’s he?” – “Never heard of him”. These are the comments that are heard whenever this name is mentioned in the company of younger drummers. Who is ERIC DELANEY? Eric Delaney was the first English Drummer/Percussionist to have hit records. Titles such as “MANHATTAN SPIRITUAL”, “ORANGES & LEMONS”, “BIG NOISE FROM WINETKA”. These hits featured Eric playing Tympani. Eric’s ambition then (mid 1950’s) was to be a complete Drummer/Showman/Box Office attraction, and at the present time that is exactly what he is still doing. The music may not be your particular cup of tea, but a visit to an ERIC DELANEY gig should not be missed. Lights inside drums, showmanship, superb control, high energy performance – Mr. Delaney has been doing these things for 35 years, proving that there’s really nothing new in the drum world. Turning up at an Eric Delaney gig, your eyes alight first on the white monster of a kit with bass drums that sound like cannons. Scanning the stage you will see Tympani, tubular bells, gongs and a host of assorted percussion instruments. To watch the man in person, you will not believe the amount of energy put out (as well as being technically brilliant on all instruments) as Eric leaps around the stage playing what appears to be everything in sight. His version of “PERSIAN MARKET” will see him playing, Tympani, drum kit (sticks and brushes), xylophone, orchestral cymbals crotales, sandpaper blocks, gongs and tubular bells. |
